Posterior Cervical Foraminotomy (PCF) is a minimally invasive neck surgery done to relieve pressure on a spinal nerve that is causing neck pain, arm pain, numbness, or tingling.
It is performed from the back of the neck and focuses on freeing the pinched nerve, without removing the disc or fusing the bones.
Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arm or hand
A pinched nerve caused by:
Bone spurs
Disc bulge
Narrowing of the nerve opening (foramen)
Symptoms that do not improve with medication or physiotherapy
How the procedure works
A small incision is made at the back of the neck
The surgeon gently removes a small amount of bone or tissue pressing on the nerve
This creates more space for the nerve to breathe and heal
No screws, rods, or fusion are usually needed
Key Benefits for Patients
✔ Relieves arm pain and nerve symptoms
✔ Preserves normal neck movement
✔ No spinal fusion in most cases
✔ Smaller incision and less muscle damage
✔ Faster recovery compared to traditional surgery
Is PCF Safe?
PCF is a well-established and safe procedure when performed by an experienced spine surgeon. Like all surgeries, there are risks, but serious complications are uncommon.
